Day 80 of 365
That's a knife
It's my 80th day and so far this experience feels like a chance to prep for an apocalyptic moment. I'm pretty sure I could hunt and fish and if today's project works out I'll be able to cut up whatever I might get with my archery skills or my fishing moments.
Today was my first encounter with an angle grinder as I accomplished my first stock removal knife blank.
I was cleaning out a cabinet the other day. I was really looking for a paddle drill bit and in the leaning tower of tools I found a very old very well used meat cleaver. This monster belonged to my grandfather. I'm sure this four pounds of steel carved a fair amount of meat in it's day. Since I don't have many occasions to cleaver animals I decided today would be another repurpose experience.
I will confess that I'm not a fan of the angle grinder. My youngest kid told me, "be careful, hold it straight or it'll shred and rip your flesh off." How could this possibly freak me out?
Since this is the year of challenging fears and trying new things I revved up that grinder and cut myself a knife blank. It wasn't as easy as that but my kid is a great teacher and in about an hour I had what resembles the shape of a knife. The next step was using the belt sander to remove the extra material. My kid built this machine. I call it the knuckle grinder because it turns so fast it bounces on the floor. I'm not a big fan of this piece of equipment but here I am again, crushing all my fears one day at a time.
I'm happy to say no blood was shed during the creation of today's experience. I'm actually pretty happy with the outcome and I was able to keep the original company marks on the steel. I think my grandfather would really like what we created.
Day 80 makes the cut.
