Day 54 of 365

I'll be honest, today is still pretty dark. I was struggling to come up with an idea for today but I really just wanted to stay in bed and pretend that the last few days hadn't happened.

My morning routine is pretty simple. Wake up, write down any weirdness from my dreams and hit social media before I crawl out of bed. This is all done while wearing my super awesome cheater readers.

I broke the cycle this morning and messaged my kid for coffee.

Sundays are for coffee and tea at Starbucks. We sit together and share the craziness of our week and this week had a bunch of crazy in it. Instead we looked at memes, laughed and enjoyed each other's company. One of the best parts was when my husband showed up and we had some time together. This set the stage for day 54 as we set out on a pretty cool adventure.

Today we went to visit Northpoint Lighthouse in Milwaukee Wisconsin. This was my very first climb to the top and it was pretty amazing. This particular lighthouse was built in 1887 when Milwaukee was a booming trade port.

Who Knew?

The lighthouse has a tiny museum in the space that once housed the families who kept the lamp signals burning. The docent on staff gave us the most detailed tour. After all the stories we climbed to the top of the tower. One of the most unique features of this place is that the tower itself has been built and rebuilt a few times, each retaining original parts of the previous structures. As you step up to each level you travel back in time. The first part was built in the 1900's, as you reach the third flight the tower is part of the original piece moved from the eroding shoreline. Every time the lighthouse was rebuilt they placed the wrought iron lantern room on top. We climbed that today and my heart was racing and it wasn't from all of the steps.

This lighthouse closed in the late 1990's when everyone switched to satellite navigation. We can thank a small group for rescuing the abandoned structure and restoring it into a museum. It's worth a visit and if you want to spend $8 you can climb to the top. It's worth every penny.

Day 54 was illuminating.
